   ATM Adaptation Layer - AAL

ATM adaptation layer (AAL) is a set of standard protocols that allow for the conversion (translation) of user traffic (such as IP or Ethernet data packets) into a size and format that can be contained in the small payload of an ATM cell. User traffic is converted (segmented) from its original form into packets sizes that can be sent inside small ATM packets. After they have been transferred through the ATM network, they are assembled back into their original form at the destination.
